Using abaca fiber to develop bioplastic film

2024 08/06

The Plant Breeding Research Institute of the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) has used Bandala abaca and banana tissue to create a hybrid variety that is resistant to bunchy top virus.
Led by Anniver Ryan P. Lapuz, Ph.D., the project team is exploring various processes, including pulping and bleaching, to extract cellulose pulp from abaca fibers. They will also characterize the properties of the extracted cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and test different CNC contents in starch-based bioplastic films.
Dr. Lapuz said an important aspect of the project is to evaluate the production cost of CNC and CNC-enhanced bioplastic films to ensure the feasibility of large-scale production and provide value-added products beyond traditional fiber uses.
